Even the Losers get Lucky Sometimes
I hold a Meetup Group in my home town of Fort Collins, Colorado. We meet every other week to play the game we all love. The other day, I was taking a break in between games and started watching two of the regulars play. They were playing a version of the game I'd never seen before. Low score cribbage. The objective was simple -whoever scores the least amount of points wins.
I discounted the game at first but soon realized this version is much like normal cribbage and is just as strategic. So I tried it, and I believe this version of the game is a great way to improve your cribbage skills. Just like "normal" cribbage, the strategy of the game comes down to the little nuances that give players an edge. you are dealt two 5's, the play is to discard those into your opponents crib. But if you're the dealer what's the play? Split them up? What can you do to make them as invaluable as possible?
About Low Score Cribbage - The Art of Losing to Win
Cribbage has long been celebrated as a game of strategy, luck, and skill, where players aim to maximize their points and peg their way to 121. But what if we flipped the script? Low score cribbage is a version of cribbage where the goal isn't to rack up points but to avoid them entirely.
The Rules of Low-Score Cribbage
The premise of low-score cribbage is simple: score as few points as possible while still playing within the traditional rules of the game. Here's how it works:
Standard Setup: The board, pegs, and deck of cards remain the same.
Objective: The winner is the player with the fewest points when someone reaches 121.
NOTE: Playing to 121 may be the official way to [play this unofficial version of the game, but if you do play this way, pack a lunch. I recommend playing to 61 or 91 to to lose... or is it win?
Scoring: Players must score their hands and pegs according to normal cribbage rules, but the strategy shifts toward minimizing points.
The Crib: If you're the dealer, you still have to fill the crib, but the goal is to make it as useless as possible—a true act of self-sabotage.
No Sandbagging: You can’t deliberately break the rules or fail to play valid cards to avoid points. For example, if you have a run or a pair during the pegging phase, you must take those points.
Strategies for Scoring Low
To excel at low-score cribbage, you need a sharp understanding of how points accumulate in traditional cribbage and how to avoid them. Here are some key strategies:
1. Minimize Your Hand Value
When discarding to the crib, try to retain cards that are unlikely to form combinations. Avoid low cards (like 5s) that make 15s easy, pairs, and cards that could contribute to runs. Instead, hold onto high, disconnected cards like a King and an 8.
2. Sabotage the Crib
If you’re the dealer, your crib becomes your enemy. Discard cards that are unlikely to work together. For instance, avoid tossing in pairs, cards that total 15, or sequential cards that might form a run. Aim to create a crib worth zero (or as close to it as possible).
3. Play High Cards Early
During the pegging phase, lead with high cards to reduce the chances of your opponent making 15s or runs. Holding low cards like a 3 or 4 increases the risk of your opponent playing off them to score points.
4. Avoid Giving Away Points
Be mindful of what cards your opponent might be holding. If they lead with a 5, avoid playing a 10 or face card to make 15. Similarly, try not to complete their runs or pairs during pegging.
The Psychological Challenge
Low-score cribbage isn’t just a test of card strategy—it’s a mental workout. For players used to chasing big scores, the reversal of goals can feel counterintuitive. There’s an art to unlearning the instinct to maximize points and embracing the nuanced tactics of minimizing them.
This variant also demands a keen sense of observation. Knowing your opponent’s tendencies becomes even more critical when you’re trying to avoid inadvertently setting them up for big scores.
Why Play Low-Score Cribbage?
Beyond its novelty, low-score cribbage is a fantastic way to hone your understanding of the game. By focusing on avoiding points, you’ll develop a deeper appreciation for the mechanics of cribbage: how combinations form, the value of pegging, and the subtleties of card discards.
It’s also a great equalizer. For experienced players, it offers a fresh challenge, while newer players might find the lighter emphasis on high scoring less intimidating. Plus, the shift in strategy levels the playing field, making it a fun, low-stakes way to enjoy a classic game with a twist.
Final Thoughts
Low-score cribbage takes a familiar game and turns it into something delightfully fresh and challenging. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best way to enjoy a classic is to break the rules—or at least rewrite the objectives. So, the next time you sit down with your cribbage board, why not give it a try? You might just discover a whole new way to love the game.
