Cribbage: The Card to Play First when Pegging

Updated: Sep 25, 2023

What makes the game of cribbage beautiful is the subtle strategies involved. Using proven strategies can give you a huge advantage when all is said and done. 2-4-6 extra points is often the difference between a win and a loss.

So to start the pegging round (at zero) in cribbage what card is the best to play? The best card to lead with is a 4. Why? For starters your opponent cannot get 15. Bur whatever your opponent plays next will give you the opportunity to do so.

Other safe cards to start the pegging round include A, 2, 3 - particularly if you have two of these cards that equal 5. This strategy banks on the second card played being a 10 (10, J, Q, or K) which is statistically the most probable. So if you have a 2 and a 3, you can bait your opponent by playing one of these cards then following up their turn with the other to get 15.

However, keep in mind that lower cards such as A, 2,3 and 4 are extremely valuable in the later stages of the pegging round in order to get 31.

What's the worst card to start the pegging round with? Never open with a 5 unless it's your only option. Again, this is because there are ore cards that equal 10 than any other card in the deck.
